Male Breast Reduction / Gynecomastia Treatment
An excess of breast tissue in men indicates gynecomastia, a common medical condition affecting millions of men of all ages and fitness levels. Fatty tissue may also be present; however, without breast tissue this concern is known as pseudo-gynecomastia. This condition is widespread, and it can be the cause of extreme self-consciousness. If you suffer from gynecomastia, you may feel uncomfortable wearing certain types of clothing or participating in activities that expose your chest. Fortunately, there are treatment options available. Our extensively trained plastic surgeon, Dr. Anthony Wilson, has the skill to help you achieve your cosmetic goals and the compassion to make this process as pleasant and comfortable as possible.
We take your privacy seriously, and we will be happy to help you schedule a consultation with Dr. Wilson so that you may discreetly discuss your needs. Contact us today for more information.
Male Breast Reduction Procedure
Prior to developing a customized treatment plan, Dr. Wilson will evaluate your anatomic indicators to determine which classification of gynecomastia you have, as well as the severity. He will also review your medical history and background to determine if the cause of your condition is due to a medication, lifestyle habit, hormonal imbalance, or other factors. In some cases, addressing possible causes first may help to alleviate the concern without the need for surgery.
In the event an operation is necessary, there are two primary techniques that are commonly used: breast reduction surgery and liposuction. Breast tissue cannot be removed with liposuction, and true gynecomastia should be treated with a breast reduction procedure. If there is fatty tissue as well as breast tissue, liposuction can be used to further contour the chest area for a more aesthetically appealing outcome. In the event no breast tissue is present, liposuction alone can be used. Depending on the volume of tissue removed, however, excess skin may need to be removed to avoid a “droopy” appearance. The size of the areolas (pigmented area around the nipples) can be modified during the reduction procedure as well.
Recovery from Gynecomastia Treatment
The recovery experience will vary depending on the technique used and the unique healing rate of each person. If surgery is performed, you should take approximately three to seven days off from work to rest. Some patients require more downtime if skin is removed. Dr. Wilson may have you wear a compression garment during this period to enhance the results and shorten recovery. Swelling and bruising are common effects, and these symptoms will fade over time. We will provide medication to manage any pain and make your experience as comfortable as possible.
