Dr. Richard Zeff explains how KYBELLA™ can reduce fatty tissue under the chin and improve facial contours.

Stratham, NH — A “double chin” is typically characterized by a collection of subcutaneous fatty tissue underneath the chin and jawline. The condition is experienced by many individuals, even those who are of a healthy weight. Dr. Richard Zeff, a board certified plastic surgeon in New Hampshire says surgical procedures such as liposuction have traditionally been the only effective means of addressing excess fat under the chin (medically referred to as submental fullness); however, there is a new, non-surgical treatment available that may change that. KYBELLA™ is the first and only injectable procedure approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to reduce excess fat under the chin.

Dr. Zeff says, for many patients, KYBELLA™ is designed to virtually eliminate the appearance of a double chin quickly and effectively, without the need for invasive surgery. There are no incisions, and many patients are able to return to normal activities the same day or within one to two days. Plus, he notes, the procedure can typically be completed in about 20 minutes. Dr. Zeff says KYBELLA™ is composed of deoxycholic acid – a molecule that naturally occurs in the human body and helps with the breakdown of dietary fat. KYBELLA™ utilizes the deoxycholic acid molecule to destroy targeted fat cells in the chin, which will be gradually filtered out of the body through natural processes. Dr. Zeff notes that two more KYBELLA™ treatment sessions should be expected, and the results should be very long lasting.

Dr. Zeff cautions that KYBELLA™ may not be the right choice for everyone. Patients must be 18 years or older to receive this treatment. Also, Dr. Zeff says that if an individual has significant skin laxity in addition to fatty tissue under the chin, a different approach may be recommended since KYBELLA™ is not designed to tighten the skin. He advises anyone interested in this procedure to discuss his or her goals with an experienced plastic surgeon to determine if KYBELLA™ is the right treatment for their needs.

Ultimately, Dr. Zeff believes that KYBELLA™ can be an excellent way to reduce the appearance of double chin for a wide range of patients. He says the option to address this prevalent concern with a non-surgical treatment will likely be appealing to many individuals. While still a relatively new technique, Dr. Zeff notes that KYBELLA™ offers great potential to enhance facial contours quickly, effectively, and comfortably.
