Transgender Top Surgery: MTF and FTM
Transgender patients struggle to live in a physical body that fails to match their gender identity. If this speaks to your experience, transgender top surgery may help you to transition to an outward appearance that better suits who you really are inside. Dr. Anthony Wilson, our extensively trained plastic surgeon, offers breast surgery for both Male to Female (MTF) and Female to Male (FTM) patients seeking a sex change. When you arrive for your initial consultation, Dr. Wilson will discuss your goals and lifestyle preferences, evaluate your anatomic needs, and develop a customized treatment plan. Every step of this process is designed to provide you with the optimal outcome. Furthermore, your comfort and safety are our highest priorities.

Male to Female (MTF) Breast Surgery
Breast surgery for MTF patients is essentially the same as breast augmentation, as breast tissue is similar in both genetic males and females. This procedure can help you achieve a more feminine physique if hormone therapy fails to provide the desired level of breast enlargement. There is a wide range of techniques available, including incision location and implant placement options, as well as an extensive array of breast implant types. Dr. Wilson will recommend one or more approaches based on your anatomic indicators and expressed goals. Together you and he will select the treatment that offers the most ideal outcome possible.
Female to Male (FTM) Top Surgery
To achieve a more masculine body type, many FTM patients choose to reduce the amount of breast tissue located on the chest. A combination of breast reduction and liposuction techniques typically will be used to achieve the desired result. Patients with minimal breast tissue will have any unwanted fatty tissue in the area removed via liposuction, and the remaining breast tissue will be excised through the areola (the pigmented area around the nipple).
For individuals with moderate or larger amounts of breast tissue, the areola may need to be repositioned to a higher location once the breast tissue, fatty tissue, and excess skin have been removed. Dr. Wilson may use an inverted T incision, located on the inframammary fold (where the breast tissue meets the chest), and a free nipple graft to provide the most natural-looking outcome possible. While the scars will never disappear entirely, they should fade in appearance over time.
At our practice, we understand that our transgender patients have unique needs and goals. We are dedicated to providing a compassionate and welcoming environment that makes you feel as comfortable as possible. We also strive to keep you well informed about your options and the transgender surgery process from start-to-finish. Furthermore, when using terms like “female,” “male,” “masculine,” and “feminine,” we are seeking to describe characteristics, and recognize that they are imperfect concepts.
