With advanced sclerotherapy treatment, Dr. Richard Zeff and Dr. Anthony Wilson can reduce and even eliminate the appearance of the common condition known as spider veins. Unlike varicose veins, which are larger, deeper, and can bulge out of the skin, spider veins are characterized by short, spiderweb-like vein formations. They typically appear as red, blue, and purple-colored lines along the skin. While not usually a health issue, spider veins can be uncomfortable, as well as unsightly. Our plastic surgeons offer non-surgical sclerotherapy procedures to get rid of spider veins for a more even-toned appearance to the skin.
Sclerotherapy is the introduction of a sclerosing agent into a vein using a small needle. The target area will be cleaned, and then the sclerosing solution is injected into the affected veins. During the procedure, you may feel a slight prick as the needle is inserted and a burning sensation as the solution is injected. The solution replaces the blood inside the spider vein and naturally causes the vein to shrink and disappear over a period of several days to a few weeks. Occasionally, additional treatments may be required in order to complete the collapse of the entire vein. If you have extensive veins requiring treatment, multiple sessions may be recommended. Each treatment is usually limited to 15 – 30 minutes.
