Fat Grafting for the Face

Fat grafting is a cosmetic procedure that repurposes your own natural fatty tissue to increase volume and enhance contour in the treated area. What areas can be treated? Virtually any location on the face can be addressed, including the lips, cheeks, and chin. Our experienced plastic surgeon can use this innovative technique alone or in combination with other procedures, including facelift surgery. There are many additional benefits to this versatile method, and Dr. Richard Zeff will discuss what can be accomplished during your initial consultation.

Fat Grafting for the Face

woman-faceFat injections can rejuvenate the face by smoothing wrinkles and deep creases and enhancing volume where there is a deficiency due to illness or the natural aging process. Fat grafting can work well alone or in conjunction with a facelift or another cosmetic enhancement procedure. Furthermore, treatment will be customized to suit your unique needs and goals.

It’s important to note, while the fat injection technique itself is minimally invasive, harvesting the fatty tissue is a surgical procedure. Liposuction is used to collect the fatty tissue from a location chosen by you and Dr. Zeff (typically the abdomen, thighs, and/or hips) and then lightly processed to be used as an injectable. Many patients appreciate this step of the treatment, which can be an opportunity to enhance body contour, and they often view it as an additional benefit of the fat grafting process.

Fat grafting in combination with a facelift offers more comprehensive aesthetic enhancement than either procedure alone. Recovery following this treatment tends to be a little longer than facelift without fat grafting, and there may be more swelling. Some patience will be necessary, but the outcome typically offers such exceptional results that patients often report the benefits were well worth the experience.

Recovery Following Fat Grafting

Most patients experience minimal pain following the fat transfer procedure. In many cases, the discomfort will arise more from the fat-harvesting treatment than from the grafting, and we will provide medication to manage these effects. Swelling and bruising in the treated area and the harvest area are normal, and these symptoms should fade with time. Volume loss will also occur, and Dr. Zeff will take this response into account when developing the initial treatment plan. Your experience may vary, as every patient’s needs and desired outcome are unique.
